Scripting Emails and Getting Mime Multipart problems & Text files attachemnts on outlook.

I'm blogging this because it was so incredibly hard to work out i spent hours troubleshooting and could not find any answers.
i was scripting in PHP creating email templates that would send from my conferencing service to my customers.
What i wanted was a Mime multipart email that would contain HTML for HTML email readers, and text for those that dont.
What was happening was that the emails would be received outlook would show the HTML and attach the text document.
and webmail would show both one after the other.
outlook attachment would look like this: at00xxx.txt
my problem was because i had my header set to this:
$headers .= "\r\nContent-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary=\"PHP-mixed-".$random_hash."\"";
and not this
$headers .= "\r\nContent-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary=\"PHP-alt-".$random_hash."\"";
the difference being that when creating a attachment mime email you need to use mixed, and then inside the mixed reference the alternative.
once i changed that it all started working.
